Statement: Congress must finish the job and protect medical research before year-end

WASHINGTON, DC (November 4, 2026) – United for Cures, a collaborative network of patient advocacy organizations, issued the following statement as Congress prepares to return to Washington, D.C., following the 2026 midterm elections:

“The 119th Congress has demonstrated strong bipartisan support for medical research, rejecting proposed budget cuts and increasing funding for the National Institutes of Health. Now that the midterms are behind us, Congress must renew its focus on protecting investments in lifesaving research. Millions of patients and families are counting on innovative treatments and cures borne from American ingenuity.

“United for Cures urges congressional leaders to finish the year strong by permanently blocking OMB’s effort to overhaul federal grant rules and securing passage of a full-year FY2027 appropriations bill that provides the certainty and stability our medical research community needs.”
