House FY2027 Spending Bill Takes a Positive Step for Medical Research
WASHINGTON (June 12, 2026) – United for Cures, a collaborative network of patient advocacy organizations, released the following statement on the FY2027 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill released by House Appropriations Committee leaders ahead of full committee markup later today.
United for Cures Executive Director Erika Sward welcomed several key provisions in the legislation, including an increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), strong support for continued medical research and investments, and stronger congressional oversight to help ensure taxpayer investments are effectively accelerating the development of new treatments and cures.
“Patients and families across the country are counting on continued investments for new treatments and cures. We are encouraged that the House Appropriations Committee has proposed a $100 million increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health, recognizing the critical role medical research plays in improving and saving lives,” Sward said. “For decades, NIH-supported research has delivered breakthroughs for the nation’s most devastating diseases and brought new hope to millions of Americans. Continued investment in medical research will help ensure that promising discoveries can move forward and reach the patients who need them.”
Sward added, “We appreciate Chairman Aderholt including the bipartisan language from the final FY2026 bill that limited multi-year funding. Including this will continue to ensure NIH funding results in the maximum number of shots on goal and that NIH resources can support the critical research happening today. We must maximize research funding to ensure it advances discoveries and brings hope to families waiting for breakthroughs.”
