Biomedical Research Advocates Applaud NIH Director for Commitment to Fully Utilize Remaining FY25 Funds
WASHINGTON (June 5, 2025) – Today,15 organizations dedicated to advancing medical breakthroughs for disease treatment and cures expressed their appreciation to Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), for his commitment to fully obligate the remaining FY25 funds by the end of the fiscal year.
In a letter, sent to Dr. Bhattacharya, the organizations thanked him for meeting with the group last week to discuss the Administration’s recent decisions to halt or pause funding for biomedical research. During the meeting, Dr. Bhattacharya affirmed that NIH will appropriately allocate all remaining FY25 funds appropriated by Congress before the fiscal year ends.
“We are deeply grateful to you and your staff for taking the time to meet with us on Thursday, May 29. Most importantly, we appreciate your commitment that NIH will fully obligate all FY25 funds by the end of the fiscal year,” the letter states. “Delays threaten to stall momentum and diminish opportunities for urgently needed breakthroughs. Your commitment to appropriately obligating these funds is a vital step forward—and we thank you.”
During the meeting, organizational representatives voiced concern that funds previously designated for medical research trials and programs—some with the potential to drive major breakthroughs—were paused or halted. They also noted that grant funding has been slow to resume, and the delays are already having a significant impact on critical research. Dr. Bhattacharya affirmed that all funds appropriated in FY25 would be spent by the end of September.
The letter comes on the heels of the Trump administration announcing additional details for the FY26 budget that included severe cuts to medical research.
